Pre or Co-requisite EDTP 639 An introduction to instructional strategies and curriculum for teaching secondary content that emphasizes effective instruction based on understanding assessment and how assessment informs effective instruction. Topics include development of comprehensive assessment strategies and their interrelationships with creation of learning objectives, selection of instructional techniques, and preparation of instructional plans. Current trends in secondary school structures, issues of traditional and authentic assessments, and teacher effect on student achievement are explored. Focus is on meeting individual needs and using content knowledge to inform instructional practice by drawing on knowledge gained through previous study and knowledge bases that reflect current research and best practices in secondary content areas.

A study of the expanding types of literacies required for teaching and learning in the K-12 schools, with a concentration on digital information and media literacies. Analysis of core information literacy skills serves as the foundation for a discussion of the effects of current and emerging media on the evaluation and creation of knowledge. Topics include the effective use of online databases and search engines to access information and media resources; application of the research process; information and media literacy skills needed for reading and navigating the web environment and creating new content; options for age-appropriate, subject-specific research assignments that involve K-12 students in project-based learning; and issues related to ethical uses of information and digital citizenship across literacies.

Second of a three-quarter course series that provides students with knowledge and concrete skills for working with and advocating for underserved populations. Through coursework and placements in community health clinics and social service organizations, student will broaden and deepen their understanding of the social and economic determinants of health, how they impact underserved populations, and the various levels at which these challenges can ¿ and should ¿ be addressed. Student will engage in structured activities that center around supporting the mission of their placement organization: direct service with clients and design and implementation of a capacity-building project. Weekly Monday evening classroom meetings serve as a forum for teaching and training, discussion of class readings and placement experiences, project development, and troubleshooting and support. Examines the intersection of migration, poverty and health; provides opportunities for engagement directly with community partners working with Bay Area Mexican migrant populations. Weekly knowledge and skills-building sessions covering the process of migration; the demographic characteristics of the local migrant population; the health and socioeconomic status of local migrant populations; current initiatives to improve their quality of life and well-being.
