The Flora Henderson Knight Scholarship was established in 2006 for the purpose of providing an annual tuition award to an incoming freshman student. Student must be of African American or Hispanic heritage, with a minimum 2.5 GPA, and majoring in Education, Business, Medicine, Math, or Political Science. Student must also be an Alabama native and come from a low -income background. Preference will be given to students that are the first in their family to attend college.
This means that the application process can be time consuming.
Donated by local businessman John Laidlaw, these scholarships are designed to support students with an interest and focus in performance and are awarded to students within the Department of Theatre and Dance. Interviews, auditions and demonstration of academic achievement are required.
As I have mentioned before, a can lead students to assume the wrong eligibility requirements. In this case, you don’t have to be black, a part of any congressional caucus, or a spouse to apply for this scholarship!

The Helping Hands Development Award was established to recognize an outstanding Sophomore, Junior, or Senior student who has candidacy status beginning in Fall semester in the College of Education. Students must declare a major in Leisure Studies with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
(prior to the applicant's junior or senior year in college)
The applicant must be a Geography major in good student standing. He/she should have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. However, the selection committee may consider students who do not satisfy this requirement if they have performed with excellence in Geography classes (average GPA at least 3.0) taken at University of South Alabama. Applicants must submit a research proposal outlining their research plans for the upcoming summer.
New freshman/transfer: August 1
Preference shall be given to students who have volunteered with the Mapp Child and Family Life Program. If there is not a student eligible with previous volunteer experience, then the award will go to a Leisure Studies/Therapeutic Recreation student who has an interest in volunteering with the Mapp Child and Family Life Program.

The Fearn Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarship in Geography provides a stipend for a worthy undergraduate student who wishes to gain hands-on professional experience in a summer research project which should last approximately 8 weeks. A Geography faculty member at University of South Alabama will monitor progress of the research. The student will be expected to prepare a written report and/or a poster summarizing the objectives, data collection, analysis, and final conclusions of his/her research findings.

The James E. Denmark and Wayne Isphording Memorial Scholarship was established for the purpose of providing financial assistance to the Geology major with the highest academic standing after completing the sophomore geology sequence. Recipients are selected by department faculty based on academic merit and are not required to complete an application.
